Captain Jack

I'm a terrible person and didn't do a study yesterday - it was a rather busy day and by the time I remembered I hadn't done one, I was about to go to sleep. I hope to do two today in order to make up for it.
Here's John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Dr. Who:

I stopped working on this one after an hour and 20min, though I could have worked so much longer to correct his inaccuracies. I never realized what an interesting and difficult face John Barrowman had. Quite the challenge. Either way, I got close enough that I was satisfied.

The Doctor

I continued my studies a little later this night, and chose to move on to a character from my favorite TV show, Dr. Who. Who better to start with than the Doctor himself?
Here is my Tenth Doctor:

I chose this specific reference of David Tennant because he looks completely uninterested with anything; a very rare look for the Doctor. In fact, as the Doctor, I don't think I've ever seen this face. Either way, I had to draw it. This one took an hour and fifteen.

Sherlock

I was planning on making these studies a one-a-day deal, but I apparently couldn't stop myself today. Good art vibes~
Anyway, here's Sherlock, like I promised:

Rather than going for a regular Robert Downey Jr. reference, I chose this shot from Sherlock in order to work on his profile. Not gonna lie, I really wanted to draw his spectacles as well...
This one took almost exactly an hour.

Break Studies - Watson

Happy belated Christmas! I know I've been enjoying my holiday celebrations - friends, food, gifts and all that jazz. Oddly enough, right now I'm most excited for my break from my normal work routine because I get to work on art! During this week I'll be focusing on male facial studies (possibly forms as well) by doing ~1 hour speed paintings. Here's my first one:

I started with Jude Law because I recently went to the new Sherlock Holmes movie - which I loved, btw -and figured it was appropriate to start here. Robert-Downey Jr. will probably show up soon. I hit an hour and ten before I could put this one down, although there are still a myriad of problems I'd like to fix.

Dresden

I'm not sure how popular the Dresden Files are, but I started reading them a few months ago, and had been plenty aware of them for a year or two before hand. I adore these books. I finished the fourth book earlier this month, and what an ending it had! I look forward to continuing the story.
Here's a quick speed painting of Harry from the TV series:

I can't remember just how long I spent on this one, but I know it wasn't terribly long. I used a ref, and even so, his lips were troublesome.

Horns

This post is all about ram horns. It'd be pointless to explain why I decided to devote an entire sketch session to things with horns, because I don't even know. Either way, enjoy:

I like the top left weird deer and the bottom right derpy antelope the most. These were all done in photoshop.

Lace and Stones

Not much to say about this one - it was a little sketch I did last weekend just to play around with some intricacies of the veil. I have a few other random sketches to post, so here's hoping I don't forget with all the holiday/work rushing that's already started.

More Poison Ivy!

I think I'm mildly obsessed with Poison Ivy....I rarely ever EVER do fan art, and here's my second post in a row concerning her. So weird. I sketched this one up in the past week between playing League of Legends (something else I'm becoming obsessed with..) and Thanksgiving festivities.

I've gotta say, I really don't like fully getting rid of a sketch once I've gone over it with cleaner 'line art' lines. I feel like the piece loses it's gesture when the initial sketch is taken out, so that's why I will generally leave them like this even though there's a perfectly clean line art layer on top. :)
I actually drew this as an example for some commissions that I'd like to start doing soon to raise money for a new tablet. My poor intuos4 is having some connectivity issues where if I move the cord too much, it'll die. :( I feel sad for it. While it still lives though, I'm planning to offer rather cheap commissions for another I4 medium (most likely..I think a large would be awkward).
We'll see how that goes!

Poison Ivy

I feel like I've been ignoring my poor sketchblog. :( This week shouldn't be quite as hectic as the past month has been, so I'll try to post some of the sketches I did during October. A lot of them have been physically in my sketchbook...so I've been a little lazy in transferring them to digital form.. heh.
Either way, here's a Poison Ivy redesign I started about three weeks ago at this point, haha:
I've never done a character redesign before this one, so it was kinda fun. I wanted base her outfit off the bleeding heart flower, and it turned out to be more of an evening wear look. Not sure how I feel about it, but I'll continue to play around with the design for sure.

Character Designs

Hey hey, a couple new things are going on in my art life. First, I decided to audit the Concept Art course at the uni. to keep myself practiced and because it's being run by a different instructor so hopefully I'll learn some new things! Also, I finally got myself a ConceptArt.org account yesterday so I can start participating in their Character of the Week and maybe Creature of the Week challenges! I think it will help me grow as an artist, as well as get me to produce some even better designs!
Today, I've got some character thumbnail designs for a Half-Drow Ranger (who's a Hippogryph rider!) that I play in a Pathfinder campaign.

As it says on the design sheet, the character is from the Northern regions of the world, so most of her clothing is rather bulky and warm, or has many layers. As a Ranger, she is also close to nature and is skilled in Trapping, Tracking, and Hunting, so she sports many furs and other hand made clothing items. She has an owl pet...mostly just because I like owls, but also because she feels a close kindred to avian kind - hence the whole Hippogryph riding thing.
Now we'll see if I can choose between all these for a final design...I think asking for opinions is definitely in order.

Curls

It's been too long since my last post. I definitely haven't had quite so much time to free draw lately, but I did manage to sketch this up last night then finish it up today.

I didn't have much in mind while painting this, nor did I use a reference. It just kind of flowed out. I spent around 1-2hrs on it in total in Photoshop.

Thanks for looking~

Shapeshift Process

Wanted to post a process quick for the shapshifter. It's the only one with layers that looked like a process, lol.
So that's what I've got. Started with the sketch, did a base color layer under the sketch. Started rendering, then started working on the wolf parts (I actually had them on another layer with the original sketch, but didn't work on them until the end.) Kinda sad to cover up the hands, because they looked quite natural.

Product Out

I haven't posted much lately because some changes have been happening. I got and started the job I mentioned in the last post - been there since Monday the 20th! Because of that, I haven't been free drawing so much, however the product I had been working on for the past month with Little Red Goblin Games LLC was finally published last week, so I can finally post that artwork. Here are two of my favorite illustrations from the free Sample Pack:
Both were done in Photoshop in roughly 5-8hrs.
If you're interested in getting this product, you can sign up for the Little Red Goblin Games Newsletter here: Link

Fashion!

I was pretty stressed for most of this week, because I had an interview today for a Web Maintenance position. It seemed like it went well, but I'm honestly glad it's over so I'm not stressing anymore. Either way, first thing I did when I got home was start a random sketch!

Honestly, not much thought went into it, I just sketched and painted whatever wanted to come out. If it looks weird (or fantastic) you can blame my sub conscience.

Hair Dilemma

Sorry I haven't posted any sketches for a bit, most of the art I've been doing recently are illustrations that can't be shown till the product is released. Needless to say, once that happensI'll have a huge art unload! ;D
Here's a little something I started working on last night:
This character is for an upcoming Scion game I'll be playing, and I've found that character creation goes much better for me if I already have the concept drawn out. I'd be much further along with the drawing if it weren't for all the hair styles that I drew and cannot decide between (before posting, I had 7 or 8 hair styles..but I've since narrowed it down to just these 3).
Ugh! Decisions!

Military Transport

Had a challenge over the weekend to design a Military vehicle that would traverse the forest. Vehicles usually aren't my thing, and I know next to nothing about the military, so hopefully this concept isn't too degrading to either subject:

Done in Sketchbook Pro - added the boarders and text in Photoshop. I feel bad because this transport is kinda nasty to the surrounding terrain with the saws and front spikes (they pick up lower vegetation and mulch it...I guess that helps new things grow right...?).

Flying Attacker

Hi :)
Randomly sketching for fun tonight. I wanted to work on some dynamic posing, so I did..and I like the outcome!
Sketched in Photoshop. It started the same way as the dragonlett with a really blob-y sketch of shape, movement, and a tiny bit of lighting information. Right now I'm at the detail sketching stage, and next I'll be throwing some colors down and cleaning things up. Then on to final rendering. I'll most likely be lame and leave out the background, hehe

Mages

Nothing terribly interesting to report, I've basically been re-couping after finals and preparing for the real world. Scary! Anyway, here's a few warm up sketches:

I'm seeing a slight mage obsession...I'll probably paint one in the near future to get it out of my system. These were done in Sketchbook Pro.

Koi Sketches

I've got some koi concepts for you today that I drew for a friend of mine going to AAU in San Fran. He's working on an animated short film that I get to do concept art for every so often.

I based some of the fishes on other creatures to give some variety to my concepts. One had the essence of a crocodile, one an eel, and one has a beta fish feel. I think using traits from completely different beings can give you something very interesting in the end.
These were sketched in Photoshop about a month ago.

Draaagonlette

Finals are over and I'm officially graduated! Woo! Time to quickly pick up an hourly job so I can live while I perfect my portfolio and start applying to studios. I'm very excited for what's to come, and I'm hoping to create some new paintings, as well as finish up the ones that got lost in finals. Take the dragonlette for example:

I'm hoping to get him all finished up sometime in the next few days - but here's the step where I started adding some background and the strong lighting that gave him those harsh shadows. Really, most of the painting is refined to a pretty good point, so I won't have much to do when the colors start coming in.

Destruction Continued

Just wanted to post the rest of the WIPs for that environment in between my finals work.

Once I started to define the upper city, I started liking the painting less and less even though I was really into the sky. I decided eventually to just cut it out and focus on the destructed buildings and wall off the top side city.

Boo, sickness!

Got a cold during finals - figures! Unfortunatly I've had to lay around doing nothing since Monday to attempt recovering. I guess it's worked since my fever is essentially gone by now, so now it's hard at work again to finish everything up for the final week of the semester! Here are some more WIPs until I have more time to free sketch again:

First one's the sketch I decided to work on for the cityscape matte, and the second's laying down some basic colors and getting some details going in the rocks.
Photoshop for both.

Monday, April 18, 2011

So..

I think I mentioned finals lurking around a week or so ago...that's why I haven't been posting so much. I did recently make a matte painting for a class, so I'll post some process shots of that for sure.

Top is my refined value for the random dragonlette I was working on a couple weekends ago - you'll have one more update of him before finals are over, then hopefully I can actually finish the painting! Below that are some of my environment sketches for the class in which I'm painting all my mattes...which strangely enough is Advanced Character Development...
Both are in Photoshop

Tree!

Just wanted to update quick before heading to bed - today was tabletop night, so I was away from the internet for most of the day, however I did get some good sketches done of the character that I played in our World of Darkness one shot! I'll be sure to post those in the near future.

This was a 30min speed painting that I did about four months ago to demonstrate my speed painting process to one of my friends. Painted in Photoshop

Finals are coming.. o_o

Finals, they are approaching. Unfortuanately for me, I took two huge project classes, so although the end of the semester is still around three weeks away, I've already got a mountain to start chipping down. Luckily, one of my finals has a lot to do with painting, so I'll be able to post sketches and WIPs for those, however my other one is a level in Unity, so I might not be posting so much of that. Either way, here's a backlog sketch!

I posted the initial idea sketches for the steampunk spartan airship a few entries back, and this was the general shape that made the most sense. During these sketches I was playing around with the functionality of the craft. Drawn in Sketchbook Pro.

Dragonlette

Last week was quite a busy one, but such a great one at the same time. One of my best friends came to visit from San Fransisco and we had a blast! Strangely enough, we spent a lot of our time together drawing, so here's the initial sketch of a painting I worked on over the weekend:

Done in Photoshop. It started strangely compared to how I usually work, because instead of just sketching or just blocking, I worked for in the style of silhouetting, then sketching what I saw in the silhouette.

Ships

Here's some initial concepts I drew up for a steampunk spartan airship last semester. They were fun, since I'd never drawn an airship, or a ship at all...so there's some inaccuracies to be sure, even though I had to do quite a bit of research to even have a clue. Drawn in Sketchbook Pro.

Testing..

So I've been messing around with this new style a bit to do quick character sketching (I mentioned something about this before..). It's a sketch with some basic flat colors and a texture to add some interest on top. Here's my first example

He's one of my boyfriend's characters from an Exalted tabletop game we play in which he's a martial artist who's style is based around taking drugs.... He's very difficult to try and roleplay with because he also has a very low intelligence score and he's obsessed with sex. Gave me a ton of pose ideas though, so he was fun to draw!
Used Photoshop for this one.

Knight

Long day doing portraits today - did seven instead of the four or five I did in the past days, so my feet got a little sore. Feels nice to just chill now and do some art! I'm currently working on a style for doing quick-ish character drawings for commission purposes or just a style for quick characters in general. Either way, I may post some sketches for those here later.

For now, here's a character portrait and body sketch I did for a knight in an Anima: Beyond Fantasy table top game I was in. This was actually an NPC that I drew for the DM/my boyfriend, and we never even got to meet him! Frustrating since I already drew him and everything, lol. Sketchbook Pro.

Spring Break's Gone

Here's the rest of those dresses which are also done in Sketchbook Pro. Yesterday was the official end of Spring Break for me, so it's back to the grind. :/ This week is quite a busy one, because we're having events at school for the duration, one of them being portrait drawing stations. For yesterday, today, and tomorrow, I'm drawing quick 20-30min portraits in 2hour blocks each day. It's a lot of fun and very good practice, though I'm sad that I don't get pictures of most of them, otherwise I'd try to post a series.

Dresses

Here's a set of Grecian styled dresses I sketched up in August to practice working with a style constraint, but making interesting variations at the same time. There's another set that I'll probably post later.

Done in Photoshop using references in DeviantArt stock. I always enjoy doing anatomy studies.

Spartaaa

Saturdays are always pretty busy for me, so here's a post quick before I head out for today.

I drew this character concept last semester. It's a Spartan warrior if brought into a steampunk era, and it's drawn with graphite! Seems like I don't scan/photograph my real sketches enough..

/Waking Up

Decided to post first thing out of bed today, since I still have some backlogged sketches to post. This one was kind of weird for me, because I've never drawn a peasant before, so it was challenging to make him look interesting while keeping in mind that he didn't have the money to buy fancy clothing. I was asked to draw this during summer semester by someone in a scriptwriting class, this being one of their characters. The random doodle was..I think a noble further along in the story. Either way, I used Sketchbook Pro for both the sketch and the coloring for once..I usually don't add color with Sketchbook because I much prefer Photoshop for that.

Last Racer WIPs

I finished up the racer girl I posted WIPs for a few days ago, but I realized I wasn't keeping my WIPs very updated x_x. Here's what I meant to post Monday:

Decided to cover the stomach because it just didn't make sense and honestly looks better more streamlined (although it did lose sexy points, boo). Things are also getting more rendered of course.
This one is just working more on rendering and polishing.
The final is posted here on my DeviantArt: http://toshuninja.deviantart.com/art/Motocross-201252486
This is all in Photoshop.

Inspiration

I went on a walk this afternoon, and while on it I saw this weird pine cone/flower looking thing on the ground, and it kinda looked a little like a cool headpiece.. so I got this massive inspiration! Right after getting back home from the walk, I hopped on Sketchbook Pro and drew this!
I love it when inspiration decides to show up :)

Face Practice

Random faces and hand/arm. I believe I drew this during the summer last year just to get some face practice in, so I have no clue why a hand and arm decided to show up. /shrug

Spring Break

Spring break is going on this week, so I spent most of yesterday playing games (Minecraft and Dragon Age 2). Ahh, it was nice. But back to drawing now!!
This one is quite old..and so random that I'm not quite sure when and why I drew it. One of those mindless things that are so great, ya know? Sketchbook Pro...at least I remember that!

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Late

I ended up getting back home quite a bit later than I'd planned, so I never got to post that WIP yesterday. Pretty much laying down the basic colors to get an atmosphere going. All Photoshop still.
I'm quite a bit further on the painting now.

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Currently..

Thought it might be fun to post something I'm currently working on:

This is the base sketch for a small painting I started today. I've got about 2hrs into it so far, but I'm busy for the rest of the day, so maybe I'll post a WIP late tonight.

Crazy~

I wouldn't usually put a painting here, but DeviantArt wouldn't let me upload it.

I can't remember if this was a half hour, or an hour speedpaint. Either way, the theme was 'Crazy,' so I went with a nutters robot. Used Photoshop.
